How can the back crawl?

- brown leather boots- ankle-height, nice leather, lace-up, well-made
- a car (and to be able to drive)
- pretty much everything on the anthropologie, liberty and topshop websites
- clothes- red ralph lauren poncho, ribbed knee-high socks
- lipstick- chanel rouge noir
- perfume- not fruity or sweet but classy, subtle, with notes of fougère
My awareness of my own frivolity is clearly apparent from the way in which I use the word ‘want’ rather than ‘need’. Revolting though it is, the two words have become considered synonymous by many people in today’s society, as we ahave become unprecedentedly materialistic and reliant on material wealth as a source of ‘happiness’.
I know that I’m not the only person who is aware of the travesty that is mammon and materialistic greed, yet continues to strive for material wealth in an attempt satiate their perpetual desire for ‘more’. We are constantly made aware of the damage we are doing our planet, by government commercials, newspaper articles and the feature-length ramblings of Al Gore. So why do we continue? What makes us carry on, regardless of the harm we are doing our planet and the problems we are creating for future generations, and even our generation? Is it simply narcissism or sheer oblivion? Selfishness or powerlessness?
